ChimneyScapes: Perspectives on Rural Estonia and Industrial Heritage

This ELU project will research the ongoing transformations of Estonian rural life from the perspective of its industrial infrastructure, specifically chimneys, collective farms and factories.

The aim of the project

What is the story of the landscape when approached from the position of its infrastructure? What perspectives are developed when thinking with infrastructures? What kind of relationships are enabled through infrastructures?

The course activities will include archival work, interviews, and field visits. The participants will collect information on the technical features, construction, usage, and current status of rural industrial infrastructure. This information will then be contextualised in relation to current discussions on the condition of social life in the Estonian countryside. We will examine, for instance, the discourses associated with rural depopulation, re-industrialisation, and local relationship to Soviet legacy. The results of this project will result in a public exhibition and an interactive map.

Extra information about referencing and rights

When referencing project outcomes, the APA7 citation system is used.
If a work has more than 20 authors, the names of the first 19 authors are listed, followed by an ellipsis (...), and then the name of the final author. If there are fewer than 20 authors, the names of all authors are listed.
